If you suffer from sleep apnea, the idea of having to travel can feel overwhelming. However, taking a bit of time now to prepare for your trip can allow you to enjoy the trip without compromising your health.
No matter where you’re going – whether it’s a cross-country flight or a weekend road trip – bringing your CPAP machine with you is going to be critical in maintaining your sleep therapy.
Follow these five simple tips to protect your sleep—no matter where you’re headed.
1. Pack Your CPAP Machine the Right Way
Before you leave, make sure your CPAP machine is safely packed in a dedicated travel case. Most CPAP machines come with a padded travel bag that’s perfect for organizing your equipment and protecting it during transit.
What to pack:
- Your CPAP machine and power supply
- Mask and tubing
- Distilled water (if using a humidifier)
- Extra filters (just in case)
- Battery backup (more on that below!)
Travel tip: If you’re taking a flight for your trip, know that CPAP machines are considered medical devices and do not count towards your carry-on limit when flying, so be sure to pack it with your carry-on to avoid damage during travel.
2. Know the TSA & Airport Guidelines
At security, you’ll need to remove your CPAP machine from its case for separate screening. Place it in a bin, ideally inside a clear plastic bag to keep it clean. The mask and tubing can stay in the case.
Expect TSA to swab the device for explosives—it’s routine and nothing to worry about.
Travel tip: Allow a few extra minutes at security in case of delays, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the screening process.
3. Bring a Travel-Approved CPAP Battery Backup
If you’re flying overnight, sleeping on the road, or worried about power outages, it’s smart to bring a portable battery to power your CPAP.
One of our favorite options? The Portable Outlet Battery.
Why we recommend it:
- Provides 8–10 hours of CPAP therapy on a full charge (with standard tubing and low humidity)
- Fully TSA- and FAA-approved for air travel
- Perfect for camping, RV trips, truckers, and outdoor adventures
- Optional car charger available
- FSA & HSA eligible
NuCara Tip: The Portable Outlet is a reliable backup for home use too—ideal for patients worried about power outages disrupting their therapy.
4. Double-Check Airline CPAP Policies
Planning to use your CPAP in-flight? Contact your airline in advance to check their CPAP usage policies—some require up to 48 hours’ notice.
Make sure:
- Your device is FAA-approved
- You bring your own battery, as in-seat power may not be guaranteed
- You select a seat with power access, if available
Travel tip: A compact travel CPAP machine paired with a Portable Outlet battery makes in-flight setup quick and easy. NuCara offers lightweight, FAA-approved travel CPAP machines—perfect for flights and on-the-go use.
4. Book a CPAP-Friendly Hotel Room
Your hotel can make or break your sleep therapy while you’re away. Be sure to:
- Choose a hotel with nightstands near power outlets.
- Pack a power strip or extension cord just in case.
- Ask about bottled water if you’re using a humidifier and don’t have access to distilled water.
Travel tip: Call ahead and ask the hotel about outlet placement or request a room with easy access to a power source.
5. Stay CPAP-Compliant at Your Hotel
Call ahead to ensure your hotel room is CPAP-friendly. You’ll want:
- A nightstand with an outlet nearby
- A power strip or extension cord, just in case
- Bottled water if you don’t have access to distilled water for your humidifier
Travel Tip: Many hotels will happily accommodate CPAP users with simple requests—don’t be afraid to ask.
