If you suffer from sleep apnea, the idea of having to travel can feel overwhelming. However, taking a bit of time now to prepare for your trip can allow you to enjoy the trip without compromising your health.
No matter where you’re going – whether it’s a cross-country flight or a weekend road trip – bringing your CPAP machine with you is going to be critical in maintaining your sleep therapy.
Follow these five simple tips to protect your sleep—no matter where you’re headed.
1. Pack Your CPAP Machine the Right Way
Before you leave, make sure your CPAP machine is safely packed in a dedicated travel case. Most CPAP machines come with a padded travel bag that’s perfect for organizing your equipment and protecting it during transit.
What to pack:
- Your CPAP machine and power supply
- Mask and tubing
- Distilled water (if using a humidifier)
- Extra filters (just in case)
Travel tip: If you’re taking a flight for your trip, know that CPAP machines are considered medical devices and do not count towards your carry-on limit when flying, so be sure to pack it with your carry-on to avoid damage during travel.
2. Know What to Expect at Airport Security
If this is your first time traveling through an airport with a CPAP machine, you should know that TSA allows machines through security checkpoints – but they must be screened separately. This means you’ll need to remove the machine from its case and place it in a separate bin for x-ray screening. You can keep the mask and any tubing in the original case.
Travel tip: Be sure to put your device in a clear plastic bag before placing it in a bin for screening to keep the machine clean. Be aware that security will likely swab the machine for explosives – a standard procedure.
3. Using Your CPAP Machine on the Plane
For long or overnight flights, you might want to use your CPAP during the flight. Be sure to:
- Check with your airline ahead of time—many require 48 hours’ notice.
- Bring an FAA-approved CPAP device and a portable battery.
- Request a seat with power access if possible.
- Use a compact travel CPAP machine for easier setup.
Travel tip: NuCara offers lightweight, FAA-approved travel CPAP machines—perfect for flights and on-the-go use.
4. Book a CPAP-Friendly Hotel Room
Your hotel can make or break your sleep therapy while you’re away. Be sure to:
- Choose a hotel with nightstands near power outlets.
- Pack a power strip or extension cord just in case.
- Ask about bottled water if you’re using a humidifier and don’t have access to distilled water.
Travel tip: Call ahead and ask the hotel about outlet placement or request a room with easy access to a power source.
5. Consider a Travel-Sized CPAP Machine
If you travel often, investing in a travel CPAP machine can make your trips much easier. Travel models are:
- Compact and lightweight
- Battery-compatible
- Quiet and discreet
- Easy to clean and pack
